Well Balanced Yoga For Spine Health
Living Well Balanced has a first-rate yoga program that concentrates on spine health, flexibility training and flexibility exercises that will help your spinal column become properly aligned.
The mind-body connection is an essential part of chiropractic. LWB’s yoga practice brings the mind and body together to help people react better to the world around them, and to help their nervous systems process more efficiently (and with less stress).
“Because yoga is good for actual mobility and the health of the spine, it’s also good for mind-body centering,” says LWB’s yoga specialist Rebecca Hirota. “It helps maintain the integrity of your spinal column and therefore the integrity of your nervous system. Because this is New York City and we are overwhelmed by stimuli, people who’ve practiced yoga with us have really seen the benefits to the health of their spine, their mobility and their focus,” Rebecca says.
Rebecca has a background in classical Ashtanga and Vinyasa yoga, and has also been certified in Iyengar yoga, a form of yoga that uses props (blocks of wood, belts and such) to help people keep their posture in the right position and minimize the risk of injury or muscle strain.
“It’s all about alignment,” Rebecca says. “We combine various yoga principles to fit a person’s needs, so that we can help strengthen their spine.”
Courses in yoga are private (though LWB offers yoga workshops from time to time to introduce the concepts to a wider audience), and they are tailored individually to people with any level of yoga competence, from absolute beginner to enlightened expert. Courses last an hour.
For someone who is new to yoga, Rebecca explains how the practice of yoga can make a change in one’s spine, and in someone’s strength, “and also in the ability to respond to the world.” In other words: Yoga can make you more “alive” to everyday experiences and less stressed by stress. A client who is more experienced can often find that by working one-on-one with Rebecca, he or she can do more personal exercises, get more direct attention, than is possible in a class.
In addition, Rebecca, who is also a personal trainer, is fully aware of the workings of the muscle groups, and takes care to ensure that everyone is working yoga properly. “If you’re not body conscious, and not doing it right, inevitably you’re going to hurt yourself. We focus on correcting the position, taking care to help the spine, and get more out of the practice of yoga.”
Rebecca “tries to cater to the particular needs of a client with the services of a yoga practice. The only way to build strength is by building strength.”
It’s all part of chiropractic: the working of spine health, the immune system and emotional fitness.
